Printed Matter, Inc. came to me with this plain, grim space in the summer of 2005. Printed Matter, the artists' bookstore, has been around for 30 years. When a storefront became available in Chelsea, they needed a fast, cheap conversion into a lively and spirited shop where they could sell books, mount small exhibitions, and hold book launches and other events. They needed a major and mind-blowing transformation, and they got it!
